Five Tower Defense Mistakes I Still Make

October 7, 2026 · Lukas Vogel

Tower defense looks simple from the outside: place towers, watch enemies die. But the gap between surviving and breezing through comes down to habits, and I've got some bad ones that still cost me runs.

The first is overloading on raw damage. A wall of glass-cannon towers feels great until a swarm slips through because nothing slowed them down. Crowd control — slows, stuns, chokepoints — usually matters more than pure firepower.

Second is ignoring the map geometry. The best towers are placed where enemies spend the most time in range, not where they look impressive. Learning the path and building around corners changed my win rate more than any upgrade.

Third, fourth, and fifth, honestly, are all versions of impatience: upgrading too early, spending my economy before the hard waves, and not reading the upcoming enemy types. Slow down, check the wave preview, and let your economy breathe.
